A
“once-in-a-lifetime” event! The historic Oberammergau Passion Play
began in the middle of the Thirty Years War. Europe in 1633 was also
gripped by the deadly Bubonic Plague. The tiny village of Oberammergau
promised God that they would perform the life and death of Jesus Christ
every ten years if they were spared. It was spared the worst effects
of the disease and, true to their promise, the villagers held the first
performance of the Passion Play in a meadow in 1634. Later, the date
was moved to every ten years in 1680. It was re-enacted without fail
when in 1940, it was inter-rupted by World War II. Today, the
picturesque village in the heart of the Bavarian Alps assembles over 2,000
locals as actors, musicians and stage technicians! Reserve now
as the tour is limited to only 40 people.
